Get Unstuck: The Truth About Change, Calm, and Doing the Work
- Kerry Proudman
Hello my loves,
Let’s talk honestly for a moment. I meet so many people who are stuck in their own stuff. They come to me talking about anxiety and how it stops them from doing the things they want to do. How nobody understands what they’re going through, and how exhausting it is to live inside their own heads. And you know what? I get it. Because I’ve been there too.
But here’s where things start to shift — when I ask, “What do you do to help yourself out of that overthinking loop?” I’m often met with blank stares. Or I hear:
“I tried yoga once.”
“I gave meditation a go but I couldn’t sit still.”
“I did breath work, but it didn’t work.”
More often than not, the story ends with what tablets they were prescribed — to numb, suppress, or avoid what actually needs to be felt and processed.
Now, I want to be really clear here: every situation is unique. I understand some people do need medication to function well. My lovely friend Cath takes daily medication because she has a chemical imbalance in her brain — it helps her stay balanced and well.
But even then, the magic happens when you also feed your mindset, body, and spirit. Medication or not, the work still needs doing. The truth is: whatever you choose to do for your healing multiplies tenfold when it’s paired with practices that build emotional and spiritual resilience.
And here’s the hard truth no one wants to say out loud:
The reason you were brought to your knees may not have been your fault…
But it is your responsibility to get yourself back up.
That’s not always easy to hear. But it’s the truth that will set you free.
There Is No Magic Wand
When I worked in education, every year there were shiny new behaviour strategies, engagement models, and quick-fix programmes that promised transformation. Every year they were rolled out like the answer we’d all been waiting for.
Guess what? Nothing changed.
Because transformation doesn’t happen overnight. Not in schools, not in life, not in your nervous system. The only thing that works — truly works — is tiny consistent steps done daily.
That’s it.
I Know You’re Tired. I Was Too.
Years ago, I was working 60–70 hour weeks in a job I loved but that drained me, while raising two kids and tag-teaming life with a husband who was just as exhausted. I went to bed past 1am. I was living off fumes and caffeine.
If anyone had told me to “get up 10 minutes earlier to meditate,” I would’ve told them to f-off.
But one day, I didn’t go downstairs to watch the news. I sat on the edge of my bed for 10 minutes in silence. My mind was still racing. My heart still pounding. But I stayed with it. When the timer went off, I got on with my day.
And something wild happened:
I began to notice calm, even when life was chaotic.
One night, I felt something in my chest I hadn’t felt in years.
It was peace.
I barely recognised it at first — it was that unfamiliar.
That one change became the start of everything. I added in cold showers. A 10-minute YouTube yoga video. Thirty minutes total. That’s it. But the shift in my mood, my mindset, my reactions? Life-changing.
The Myth of “I Don’t Have Time”
People think they don’t have time for a simple morning routine.
Here’s the truth: creating time for yourself in the morning will save you time the rest of the day.
When you start your day with movement, stillness, and breath — you make better decisions, you overthink less, and you have more patience for the stuff that usually sends you spiralling.
Creating just 30 minutes for yourself each morning could save you 1–2 hours a day in stress, overwhelm, and self-sabotage. You won’t notice the difference instantly. But do it consistently, and you’ll feel it. You’ll feel you again.
Want a shortcut? Kundalini yoga includes meditation, movement, and breathwork in one short session. Done consistently 5x a week, it rewires your brain and strengthens your nervous system. Add in just one hour a week for a workshop, and you’ll feel the ripple of change within a month.
This Work Isn’t Easy. But It Works.
The work isn’t flashy. It’s not trending. It’s not clickbait.
It’s simple. Practical. Repeatable.
It’s daily decisions. Weekly commitments. Small wins that add up over time.
It’s you, saying, “I’m not waiting for the kids to be older. Or for work to calm down. Or for the stars to align.”
It’s saying, “I’m doing this now — because my peace can’t wait.”
Start small. Stay consistent. This is a marathon, not a sprint. And magic wands do not exist.
A Word of Tough Love (from Mars, with Love)
As I write this on Tuesday 8th July — Mars Day — I’m reminded that sometimes, Mars doesn’t give a crap about keeping things gentle. Mars says what needs to be said. And maybe you needed to hear this today.
If anything in this blog stings a little, sit with it. Reflect on it. If it’s triggered something in you, it’s probably because it’s hitting a nerve. And maybe — just maybe — you’ve spent more time collecting reasons why you can’t, instead of taking action that proves you can.
And if my style doesn’t land with you? That’s okay. I’m not for everyone. Find someone who is. But don’t stop searching for what helps you move forward.
You Just Need to Start
Whether you start with me, with yourself, or with someone else — just start.
