What My Shadow is Teaching Me About My Core Values

  • Kerry Proudman

What My Shadow is Teaching Me About My Core Values I’m only eight days into the 100 Day Shadow Work Challenge and already it’s showing me things I didn’t expect. What I’ve realised is that the behaviours and attitudes that irritate me most are actually pointing me back to the values I hold most dear — integrity, responsibility, truth, love, recognition, growth, and empathy. The shadow isn’t separate from me. It’s simply the flip-side of what I care about most. When I pause long enough to notice it surfacing, I can choose to transform those “not so nice” reactions into strengths. 💡 The shadow isn’t the enemy. It’s the teacher. Read the full post on my blog to see how shadow work is reshaping the way I live and love.

It’s September 12th 2025, and I’ve been doing the 100 Day Shadow Work Challenge for just eight days. Already it’s revealing so much that’s been hiding below the surface.

What’s really struck me is how the very things that trigger me — behaviours, attitudes, or patterns that irritate me — are actually pointing me back to what I value most deeply.

Shadow work isn’t about labelling parts of ourselves as “bad” and trying to erase them. It’s about recognising where our wounds, defence mechanisms, and knee-jerk reactions are really trying to protect something we truly care about. The shadow is often just the messy, unrefined expression of our most important values.

Here’s what has come up for me so far:

1. Integrity & Authenticity

I get irritated when people are “all talk and no action,” or when they constantly seek external validation. I’m learning that’s because I deeply value integrity — words aligning with actions — and authenticity, where people show up as their real selves.

2. Responsibility & Accountability

I feel frustration when I see laziness or entitlement. Because responsibility and follow-through are non-negotiables to me. Showing up and doing what you say matters.

3. Truth & Independent Thinking

Blind conformity or one-sided views push my buttons. That’s because I value freedom of thought, discernment, and the courage to think for yourself.

4. Love & Protection of Family

Again and again, my reflections show how fiercely I protect my children and loved ones. Creating safety, sustainable health, and stability for my family is at the heart of everything I do.

5. Recognition of Effort

I value when genuine effort and intention are seen. It’s not about shallow praise — it’s about recognising the energy, time, and love someone pours into what they do.

6. Growth & Potential

It saddens me to see wasted potential. Growth, expansion, and living with meaning matter deeply. I can see now that my shadow shows up when I sense someone not even trying.

7. Empathy & Connection

At my core, I want to connect and support others. I feel people’s sadness deeply, and I believe it’s the simple things we do that keep us feeling vibrant and alive. I value genuine bonds built on understanding and compassion.

The Light Behind the Shadow

When I look at these values together — Integrity, Responsibility, Truth, Love, Recognition, Growth, and Empathy — I can see how my shadow isn’t separate from me. It’s simply the flip-side of what I care about most.

  • If I get angry at “all talk, no action,” it’s because integrity matters to me.

  • If I feel defensive when misunderstood, it’s because truth and connection are vital.

  • If I feel jealous or fearful around love, it’s because family and loyalty are sacred.

My shadow rears its head in “not so nice” ways when these values feel threatened. But now I understand: when I can pause, notice my shadow surfacing, and choose my response, I have the chance to transform those less-helpful reactions into something stronger. My shadow becomes my teacher, and my weakness turns into a strength.

What Shadow Work Looks Like in Practice

The real work of shadow work isn’t just watching a workshop or journaling a reflection. It’s about how willing I am to take these insights into daily life and ask myself:

Where is my reaction showing me what I care about?
How can I honour the value beneath the trigger?
How can I express this value in a way that builds, not destroys?

I’m only eight days in, but already I can feel this challenge reshaping the way I see myself and others. I can understand now: the shadow isn’t the enemy. It’s the teacher.

Are you ready to take your turn?

There are two Shadow Workshops waiting inside the PA4A Membership Portal. You could watch both in under 90 minutes. But remember, the real transformation comes in what you do with what you learn.

So dive in, and allow your shadows to show you what you value most.

Let’s build a life that feels good from the inside out.

Lots of love, Kerry xxx
